DATEDIF Function

The DATEDIF function is one of the date and time functions. It is used to return the difference between two date values (start date and end date), based on the interval (unit) specified.

The DATEDIF function syntax is:

DATEDIF(start-date, end-date, unit)


start-date and end-date are two dates you wish to calculate the difference between.

unit is the specified interval that can be one of the following:

Unit Interval Explanation
Y The number of complete years.
M The number of complete months.
D The number of days.
MD The difference between the days (months and years are ignored).
YM The difference between the months (days and years are ignored).
YD The difference between the days (years are ignored).

To apply the DATEDIF function,

  1. select the cell where you wish to display the result,
  2. click the Insert function
    icon situated at the top toolbar,
    or right-click within a selected cell and select the Insert Function option from the menu,
    or click the
    icon situated at the formula bar,
  3. select the Date and time function group from the list,
  4. click the DATEDIF function,
  5. enter the required arguments separating them by commas,
  6. press the Enter button.

The result will be displayed in the selected cell.
