Generating images for slides with AI
The ONLYOFFICE Presentation Editor allows you to use AI assistants to generate images directly from text descriptions. Instead of searching for stock photos or creating graphics externally, you can describe the visual you need and have AI create it within the editor. This helps you quickly add relevant, custom imagery to your slides.
Generating an image
To create an AI-generated image for your slide:
- Select the text that describes the image you want, or position your cursor where you want to insert the image.
- Right-click and select AI → Image → Text to image from the context menu, or access image generation through the AI tab.
- If you selected text, AI will use it as the image description. Otherwise, enter a description of what you want.
- Wait a few seconds for the image to generate.
- The image will be inserted into your slide, where you can resize and reposition it as needed.
For more information on working with images after insertion, refer to Inserting images.
Writing effective image descriptions
The quality of generated images depends largely on how you describe what you want. A good description typically includes:
- Subject — what the image shows (a person, object, scene, concept).
- Style — the visual approach (photorealistic, illustration, minimalist, diagram).
- Context — the setting or background (office environment, white background, outdoor scene).
- Mood or tone — the feeling it should convey (professional, energetic, calm, dramatic).
General descriptions produce generic results. Specific descriptions with multiple elements give AI more to work with and typically produce more useful images.
Practical considerations
What works well
- Conceptual images representing ideas (growth, collaboration, innovation).
- Background visuals and decorative elements.
- Simple illustrations of objects or scenes.
- Abstract graphics and patterns.
What may require adjustment
- Images with specific text (AI often renders text poorly).
- Precise technical diagrams with exact specifications.
- Representations of real, named people or branded products.
- Highly complex scenes with many specific elements.
If an image doesn't match your vision, try adjusting your description, e.g., add more detail, change the style, or simplify what you're asking for. Generating a few variations with different descriptions is often faster than trying to perfect a single prompt.
Working with generated images
After an image is inserted:
- Resize by dragging the corner handles to fit your slide layout.
- Reposition by dragging the image to where it works best with your text.
- Adjust properties using the image settings on the right sidebar if needed.
Generated images are inserted as standard image objects, so all the usual image editing and formatting options apply.
Limitations and considerations
- Generation time — images may take several seconds to generate depending on the model.
- Style variation — multiple generated images may have slightly different styles even with similar descriptions.
- Subject matter — some AI providers have content policies that restrict certain types of imagery.
- Usage rights — review your AI provider's terms regarding how generated images can be used.
