Adding new fonts to ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors

Introduction

Looking for a proper font for your text but can’t find a suitable one? You can install a new font manually!

This guide will show you several ways how to add fonts to ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors for various operating systems.

Here are some important notes before the installation:

  • The fonts you downloaded may be packed as .zip, .rar or any other archive formats. You should extract them before the installation,
  • The desktop editors only support OneType .otf and TrueType .ttf fonts. If your font has another extension, try looking for it in some other sources.

Step 1. Add new fonts to your system

Choose your operating system and follow one of the suggested font installation methods:

Windows:

  • Double click the .otf or .ttf file to open it for viewing in Windows Font Viewer. Next, click the Install button and wait for the fonts to be installed. Otherwise, click the Install button in the context menu of the font file.

  • Copy the font file to C:\Windows\Fonts folder.
  • In Windows 10, you can find additional fonts in Microsoft Store. To do so, you must log in into your Microsoft account, find a proper font in the Store and click the Get button.

Linux:

  • On Linux, fonts are stored in the following folders: /usr/share/fonts/ for global fonts available for all users and ~/.local/share/fonts or ~/.fonts for local fonts available for the current user. You need to download the font file and copy it to one of these folders.
Note that installing to the folder/usr/local/share/fontsrequires root access. Also, the font files must have permissions 644(-rw-r--r--), otherwise, you won’t be able to use them.
More information about manual installation can be found here.
  • Many Linux systems, Ubuntu, for instance, have a built-in font viewer, so you can open the file using this app and click the Install button.
  • You can install fonts using your package manager, but first, make sure that the package with the font does exist. Let’s have a look at the example of a Debian-based system:
    sudo apt search tahoma
If you are able to find the package, you can install it:
    sudo apt install tahoma

MacOS:

You can install additional font using the system app called Font Book:

  • Simply double click the font file. Font Book will be opened and you will be asked whether you want to install this font.

  • Start the Font Book app. Find the downloaded file in the Finder and drag it to the Font Book icon on the Dock panel.
  • This one allows getting the fonts that are available to all macOS users but not installed on your system. In Font Book, click All Fonts in the sidebar on the left, then select a dimmed font family or one or more styles. Click Download in the preview pane, then click Download in the dialogue that appears.

The fonts you install are available just to you, or to anyone who uses your computer, depending on what you set as the default location for installed fonts (Computer or User).
